WEEKEND GETAWAY: A-DAY AT DELAWARE VALLEY UNIVERSITY - May 16, 2015

This weekend my family enjoyed a weekend trip to Delaware Valley University in Doylestown, PA for their annual A-Day which stands for Activities Day. Since 1949, DVU which was originally founded as an agricultural school has been opening their campus to the public for this weekend event filled with activities, seminars, shows and food.

There were lots of local vendors selling plants, produce, raw honey and crafts. There were also student-run activities and displays. Above is a great hydroponic system created and displayed by the students. They also had an exhibit in the library with different animals being shown.

A student shows a crested gecko. Thought to be extinct until they were rediscovered in 1994, they are truly fascinating creatures and make awesome pets.

Teaching the children about the shell. Did you know a turtle can feel when you touch their shell? Their shell's carapace actually grows from their skeletal structure so they are able to detect sensations similar to a bird's beak or your fingernail.

Here's a rather unusual pet, a Madagascar hissing cockroach. They actually make great pets. If you are looking for a low-maintenance, clean, friendly pet that doesn't require much space, you may want to consider these cuties.

A student member of the Apiary Society shows how honey is produced and then harvested. These are honeycomb cells made by honeybees. They are filled with honey and then harvested from here. The club was also educating visitors on plants that are healthy for bees.

Here's a cute piglet hoping to spread the message, "There is no such thing as a teacup pig." Did you know that pigs are the smartest and cleanest domestic animal? They even have studies that have shown pigs accomplishing tasks as quick as a chimpanzee.

They also had baby chicks, goats, a cow show, horses, over a thousand acres of farm and lots more!
