Trainer Thursday: Featuring Julie Wassell from New Leash on Life and Mindful Dog Training
Every third Thursday of every month, a local dog trainer will be present at the store from 4-7pm to answer any questions you may have about training your dog!
This month, we will be welcoming local dog trainer Julie Wassel from New Leash on Life and Mindful Dog Training.
We sat down with Julie to find out her thoughts on dog training, here is a brief snippet from our conversation:
How long have you been dog training?
I have been training for over 17 years.
What would you say is a summary of your philosophy on training?
My mantra is to reward what you want, ignore what you don't, and teach the verbs.
What are the verbs?
Name recognition, sit, down, stay, take it, leave it, go to your place, get your furry butt over here, and, when you are on leash, you walk with me.
Do you have any tips on traveling with your dog?
Safety safety safety. Make sure to secure back seat harnesses or crates. No face out the window! The wind and the air borne particles can injure your pups eyes permanently.
What 3 things would you recommend doing instead of going to a dog park and why?
Play dates with appropriate dogs, the right doggy day care (be careful), and lots of play time with your dog. A good non-traditional walk like a hike, adventure, etc. Walking the same street every day is just plain boring!
We are so excited to offer this event every month to our customers. Bring your questions about dog training and behavior and join us for some fun talks about training!
