Pet Care Tips
Monday, July 12, 2010 at 12:45 PM Below, we've listed some animal care tips that we use and recommend. Please check back regularly for updates.
Cleaning
-We use a product called Earth Friendly Cleaner. It contains natural enzymes that saftley and effectively clean and destroy odors with no harm to animals or people. We do not recommend using bleach.
-With bigger cages and cat litter pans, we will spot clean once every day or every other day and full clean once a week. With smaller cages (like hamsters), we usually just full clean once a week. You may be required to do this more or less often depending on each individual animal's needs.
-Be sure to scrub the inside of your animal's water bottle every time you refill it (we recommend once a day). Algae and other bacteria can develop, especially around the rim. In fact, replacing bottles and bowls once every few years isn't a bad idea either.
-Do not use any kind of soap or cleaner in your fish tank. It can mess with the pH and water quality. Instead, use only hot water and aquarium salt.
Feeding
-Small animals like guinea pigs and rabbits should consume 75% hay, 20% pellets and 5% treats in their diet. Always provide your animal with fresh hay. It comes in several flavors for variety for health.
-We recommend feeding a mix of protiens to your dog or cat (such as chicken, beef, lamb, rabbit, fish etc.). If your pet's stomach is used to a variety of different things, they are less likely to develop an allergy or diarhea when something does change. We offer FREE samples for dogs and cats to try.
General Care
-Be careful with temperatures. Pets can get heatstroke in over 80 degrees. Cold can also be dangerous. Room temperature for most pets (except fish and reptiles) is safe but make sure they are not near drafts (this is especially true for birds).
-You can not use a tank that was used for reptiles or small animals for fish. Aquariums need to be free of cleaners and animal feces to properly maintain the correct water quality.
-Always use the cold water fawcet to fill your fish tank (you may have to set the water aside for it to become room temperature for awhile before use). The hot water fawcett has more mineral build up that you do not want in your water.
